South Dakota Attractions explained

March 6th, 2008

I picked up a new book on South Dakota attractions and their history. They went into quite a bit of detail of how the original design of Mt Rushmore was made and all the work that went into the actual construction of the first three faces. They told about all the time and material it took to do the sculpting, how the workers actually repelled down the side of the mountain to place the dynamite charges and told of all the safety challenges that were involved. One thing I found interesting was their descriptions of all the tools of the time and how they worked for days and days with these tools just to get a small feature just right, that is if you can call any feature on a sculpture that big small. Then they told about constructing the Crazy Horse Memorial and how the technology and tools had changed. Crazy horse was built much more quickly than Mt Rushmore, not only because it was smaller, but also because of the better tools and equipment. There were also no lives lost constructing Crazy Horse unlike Mt Rushmore were several workers were killed. The safety equipment had also improved as well as government regulations
