Hall of Fame Baseball Player George Kell Passes Away at 86

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Baseball great and hall of famer George Kell passed away today at the age of 86. The Detroit Tigers third baseman was a 10-time all-star and had a .300 plus career batting average. Kell also won the 1949 batting crown, beating out fellow hall of famer Ted Williams.

After his retirement, Kell became the voice of the Tigers and went on to broadcast for the next 40 years. An interesting fact about Kell is that he lived in the same house he was born in for all his life. After burning down in 2001, he had it rebuilt on the same land.

No cause of death has been cited yet, however representatives of the Kell family reported he died peacefully in his sleep. After a 2004 car accident left him badly injured, Kell was able to recover and walk again in the following years. No connection of the accident has been made to his passing.

USS Hartford & USS New Orleans Collide in the Straight of Hormuz

Friday, March 20th, 2009

At around 1 a.m. local time (5 p.m. EDT), the USS Hartford – a nuclear powered submarine – and the USS New Orleans – an amphibious ship – collided into each on their way in to port. The collision resulted in minor injuries of 15 USS Hartford sailors and a ruptured fuel tank from the New Orleans which resulted in the loss of 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the ocean’s waters. Fortunately no damage was done to the submarine’s nuclear propulsion system. Both ships are operating under their own power, but have since returned to port to examine damage and for further investigation.

This is not the first US Navy collision in the Straight of Hormuz and likely won’t be the last. Located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, the Straight is a narrow but important waterway as it is the most heavily traveled route for oil tankers in the world.

Close call if you ask me. Loss of fuel in the ocean is never good of course, but a much better result than a ruptured nuclear sub. You have to imagine someone messed up pretty bad. No reason for two US Navy vessels crashing into each other, especially when one was a nuclear submarine. Still, glad to report no serious damage occurred.

Watch 2009 NCAA Basketball Tournament Online

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

As everyone knows March Madness starts today. However, what’s not as clear are what options the regular NCAA fan (i.e. you) has for watching games and game coverage. There’s the TV, sure, but that’s only going to get you access to regional games. This was fine once upon a time, but it is 2009 now and if you’re a sports fan like me, you need more than simply access to regional games. You need access to ALL the games – along with play by play analysis, updated statistics, and every other sort of NCAA piece of data someone can throw your way.

There are no results for NCAA Scores.

Still, this is new technology and sometimes hard to find. So we here at Manolith have done the hard work for you so that you can sit back, relax, and enjoy March Madness like you’ve always wanted – with full access.

I’ll start with the big one: CBS Sports TV’s live streaming coverage. This gives you everything – Live coverage of every game (including in HD), updated stats, schedules, scoreboards, previews, and much more. Hell, it even comes with a nifty “Boss Button” which turns the game into a serious looking work-ready spreadsheet any time you hear footsteps around the corner.

Next up: The iPhone’s CBS Sports NCAA March Madness On Demand application ($4.99 from iTunes). For those of you with iPhones, this application gives you the ability to watch streaming coverage of every game as well as updated stats and scoreboards all from the comfort of your phone. The only drawback? You need a Wi-Fi connection for video coverage. Still, it’s not all bad, as streaming audio coverage is accessible without Wi-Fi giving you instant audio access wherever you are.

Ryan Adams Marries Mandy Friggin Moore

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Everyone’s favorite neurotic blogger / tortured artist / nice guy / singer songwriter / ex Whiskeytown front man married actress / singer / Neutrogena spokeswoman /ex-tween pop star Mandy Moore. Between them they share seven slashes in their career descriptions. SEVEN.

Not only that, but they married this past Tuesday in a secret and intimate ceremony in Savannah, GA.

They started dating in 2007 and have had a turbulent and on and off relationship. After DJ AM got in that plane crash they were seen together as Ryan was having a weird “GET AWAY FROM MEEEEEE” period (he quit Tumblr! I KNOW!), but that soon fizzled out.

There are no results for ryan adams.

I love writing these gossipy articles. It’s so Danny DeVito in LA Confidential. “Very Hush Hush”. Oh man. These things are a blast to write.

Anyway, since reclaiming his sanity, Ryan has sworn off drinking and drugs and is concentrating on working at Blackbook Magazine, his music, and his personal writing. He has a book coming out and has designed two Penguin Classic book covers.

Mandy is, well, doing Mandy things like movies and singing but my editor told me that our readership wasn’t exactly going to go out and buy the next Mandy Moore album. Sorry, Mandy. Maybe y’all should do an album together. That’d be amazing.

Arrest Warrant Out For Lindsay Lohan

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Everyones favorite hot actress trainwreck now has an arrest out in her name. Start the drumroll. Dun dun DUHHHHH!!!! The warrant stems from a 2007 arrest for DUI – and also a hit and run.

She was arrested last July after infamously chasing her former personal assistant through Santa Monica in her SUV and police found cocaine in her pants which she said “were not her pants”. That may or may not go in the history books as the best alibi ever. So to round it out:

There are no results for lindsay lohan.

* Two separate misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of cocaine.
* No contest on two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 percent.
* One count reckless driving.

Where To Get The Free Goodfellas Movie Download

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

There are quite a few free new release movies to choose from on these sites, but there are also older classics like the Goodfellas Free Movie Download. This movie is arguably one of the best movies about the mob ever made. This brilliant Martin Scorsese film follows the life of a young, poor, Irish- Italian who is growing up in New York city in the 1950’s. He wants the good life, so he works his way up the chain of organized crime in Brooklyn. He makes a great life with a beautiful bride Karen (Lorraine Bracco) and a lovely home, but then lands in jail, damaging the relationships that have come to mean so much to him. Goodfellas follows the wise guy, Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), an aspiring criminal who quickly rises up within the ranks of the mob until he testifies against his former mob partners and ends up in the FBI’s witness protection program. Joe Pesci, who plays the cold-blooded nutcase Tommy DeVito, gives one of his best performances as the trigger happy mob assassin. Also stars Robert De Niro, Paul Sorvino, Chuck Low, Frank DiLeo and Frank Sivero.

Watchmen Co-Writer Asks Fans To See It Again

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

You may know David Hayter as the voice of Solid Snake in all those Metal Gear Solid games, but you might not have known that he’s also an accomplished screenwriter, with movies like the first X-men movie to his credit. In fact, he’s also a co-writer of Watchmen, possibly the most controversial comic-to-screen adaptation in history. Due to what some are calling a poor performance in theaters during its first weekend, Hayter has penned an open letter to geeks everywhere on HardcoreNerdity.com, asking for a second viewing.

“If the film made you think. Or argue with your friends. If it inspired a debate about the nature of man, or vigilante justice, or the horror of Nixon abolishing term limits. If you laughed at Bowie hanging with Adrian at Studio 54, or the Silhouette kissing that nurse. Please go see the movie again next weekend.”

As a huge fan of the original 12-issue miniseries (which is what it was before it was collected into the graphic novel), I was already planning on seeing it again in the theater, but hearing Solid Snake reach out like this makes me even more sure that I’m doing the right thing. Look, let’s face it: this movie was never for the non-fan. No one else could possibly care about this — it’s far too complex, with non-big name stars at the front, and not nearly enough standard superhero action to please the plebian moviegoer.

Cast Of Zack Snyders Sucker Punch

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

The cast of Zack Snyder’s new movie “Sucker Punch” was recently announced on movie site du jour Slash Film (or “/Film” if you’re anal about such things) and the cast is nothing short of bonertastic.

Zack’s current film The Watchmen is in theaters RIGHT NOW so go check it out. Dude also did 300. Obviously with a cast of babes like this, this will be a good movie.

Paul Harvey Dead

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Paul Harvey, the famed ABC broadcaster, is no more. Harvey captivated radio audiences for more than 60 years with his distinctive voice and style. About the secret of his successful style he’d say that he imagined having a conversation with his sister-in-law when reaching out to millions on the radio.

There are no results for broadcaster jobs.

Harvey was blessed with not only fame but also longevity. He was still active when he passed away in Phoenix, Arizona on February 28th. Harvey was 90 years old.

His radio program – Paul Harvey News and Comment – began with “Hello Americans! This is Paul Harvey. Stand by! For news!”. He was conservative in his views, leaned right, and was the dearly loved voice of the American heartland. So much so that in 2000 ABC Radio Networks awarded 82-year old Harvey a 10-year, $100 million contract. Harvey had a unique individualistic style of pitching for products, people trusted his words and advertisers knew this.

Harvey’s twice-daily news commentaries were in many ways a precursor to the blogging phenomenon on the internet today. He was a radio blogger.

Rachael Ray FHM Shoot

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Rachael Ray – TV’s bubbly homemaker personality – once took some incredibly racy photos for popular mens magazine FHM.

How is this news? This is news because it’s a perfect lesson about personal branding. This is along the same vein as Martha Stewart being photographed cooking bagel bites in a thong. It’s basically the last thing you thought you’d see: Rachael has long been criticized for being too squeaky clean and boring… and suddenly? She’s *gulp* pretty damn hot all of a sudden. Sure didn’t see that one coming.
