Hall of Fame Baseball Player George Kell Passes Away at 86

March 24th, 2009

Baseball great and hall of famer George Kell passed away today at the age of 86. The Detroit Tigers third baseman was a 10-time all-star and had a .300 plus career batting average. Kell also won the 1949 batting crown, beating out fellow hall of famer Ted Williams.

After his retirement, Kell became the voice of the Tigers and went on to broadcast for the next 40 years. An interesting fact about Kell is that he lived in the same house he was born in for all his life. After burning down in 2001, he had it rebuilt on the same land.

No cause of death has been cited yet, however representatives of the Kell family reported he died peacefully in his sleep. After a 2004 car accident left him badly injured, Kell was able to recover and walk again in the following years. No connection of the accident has been made to his passing.
