February 19th, 2010The Wurlitzer jukebox was introduced in 1933 and continued to be manufactured until 1987.
Every jukebox that was made had a unique name rather than being called a jukebox. The Wurlitzer Company has been in the music business since 1856 and they were one of the first companies who began making jukeboxes, known then as coin operated phonographs. The decision was made to stop making them in 1987 do to the digital jukeboxes that were emerging and being used.
Many of the Wurlitzer jukeboxes are collections items, with several of them worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Wurlitzer jukebox 950 model was the first design to feature the famous bubble. The remaining of these are very rare. The most popular model was the 1015 with 60,000 produced. The Centennial model came out in 1956, known also as the 2000 model. This upgrade allowed up to 200 songs to be on the jukebox. 6,000 of these were made.
