How to make your story interesting

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

G.K. Chesterton says ‘A good novel tells us the truth about its hero; but, a bad novel tells us the truth about its author’. A writer may be able to write an article on any subject matter, running into several pages. But, if it fails to hold the interest of the reader in the first two hundred words, few will read any further.

Most authors try to follow a journalistic pattern of news writing, adhering to the formula of 5W’s and one ‘H’. However, an interesting piece of writing should have a strong theme and exclusive style of its own. It should clearly indicate what is to follow and should conceal the climax till the end of the story. It is essential to maintain direct link from one part to another to ensure continuity of thoughts and to focus on the chosen theme.

A Prose of Love

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

One day a boy and girl were walking on the beach. And as they walked they were holding hands, actually clasping hands. They were just leisurely walking not talking to each other but their bodies were moving in perfect rhythm, their steps in single cadence and their hands swayed in harmony, their eyes and minds in a dreamland. They continued walking on the seemingly endless stretch of sands unmindful of the heat of the sun and the pounding surging tides and the shouts and the laughter and the chatters of the crowds and the bays of the beasts and the chirps of the birds and the whatever and the whichever around and along the beach. they continued walking without talking; they were dreaming the day.

Story : Kasol village

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

A stunning village amidst the mountains was what Kasol had to boast about, attracting tourists from all over the world. To our luck we got one of the best rooms at ‘The Alpine Guest House’. Its pleasant pine wood floors and a gorgeous balcony were just perfect, overlooking the Parvati valley that nestled among the mighty snow peaks.

Eating out in Kasol wasn’t a problem at all; the locals were used to the pour-in of tourists, mostly backpackers. Kasol is a village that is or has become more of a hippie hangout. Dozens would stop here and some even stayed back on as we got to know from Richard, a German man, who surprised us with his fluency in Sanskrit.

The best eating out place in Kasol would have to be Little Italy, a place where their multi – cuisine menu attracted most tourists. In Kasol you could gorge on Italian cuisine, Chinese or Israeli, surrounded by snow-clad mountains. An exciting place to head out to is the German Bakery that has a wide variety of pancakes, and pies, a must try is their apple – pie.

The next morning after a hearty breakfast of Aloo Parthas (potato on a flattened base) and lassi (sweet curd) we were on our way to pay respects to the Shiva Temple and the Gurudawara (Sikh Temple) in Manikaran. This well-known pilgrimage center, a 30 min drive from Kasol was captivating with its famous hot springs.

Chipping Away Your Writer’s Block

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Chipping Away Your Writer’s Block

In almost every writer’s forum, the deplorable perennial problem of writer’s block has always been brought up by both professional creative writers. Some discussions have gone as deep as defining the nature of writer’s block. In case a writer’s block (a.k.a. "fear-of-the-blank-page") should come up in the middle of the deadline, the writer will be able to hopefully do something about it.

But what is a writer’s block? On the surface, it is simply a period of non-activity for the writer. A writer or a poet may attempt to write something based on the need to write something, but then they come up with absolutely nothing! What causes a writer’s block and what can be done about it? Here are some thoughts and suggestions:

1. The fear of coming up short from their last project – Collectively speaking, most artists and writers have an obsessive compulsion to concretize and materialize, through their works, abstracted thoughts and ideas. Once they start at some project, there is always that fear of producing something despairingly short of what they have intended to create. Thus, they become disappointed in themselves. If artistic or writer’s block does not happen prior to the start of the project, it may also very well occur while the work is in process. This explains why several writers may work on different projects at the same time and jumping from one unfinished work to another. Some even abandon previous works altogether for a new one but ultimately end up not accomplishing anything in the end.

2. A comeback after a long time off – Vacations and some time off taking care of familial/domestic or personal matters can only have two extreme results: either it rejuvenates, recharges and inspires the writer for the next project, or it completely diminishes or finishes off whatever is left of a prolific and fecund mind! Let’s face it, even professional writers are, first and foremost, human beings before they are writers. And, as humans, writers too are bound to lose footing once they have taken some time off from writing, if not inspired and recharged, as mentioned.

3. Insecurities – Lack of formal training…Being a newbie…The writing style…a friend who’s a better writer…etc., etc., etc., these can all spell one thing: insecurities. Our insecurities can really work nasty for writers. We know there is no other way out other than a paradigm shift or a change in perspective for the writer. We know that there will always be other people more educated, more renowned in the creative writing field. We know there will always be writers who are relatively better than us, other trends and styles in writing which the we can become unfamiliar and intimidated with. However, the bottomline is that it is just a matter of gritting your teeth with some decision-making: to write or not to write?

4. Bills to pay, daily tasks, and other small details – Where do I get the money for the bills? Who brings and fetches the children to and from school? For writers with actual day jobs and many deadlines to meet, who can still think of writing? These concerns, to mention only a few, hampers the writer’s writer’s sensitive thoughts. These are practical things that need to be done on the daily basis. On the surface, these concerns may seem harmless to an aspiring writer. However, eventually, these daily concerns will dry up the creative writer’s reservoir that needs constant nurturing. This is not to say, however, that children, career and domestic chores and other concerns should no longer be tended to in order to write. Being a great writer does not necessarily entail shunning away from daily practical concerns, in the same manner that a person with no other daily duties does not guarantee a prolific writer. Difficult for the right-brained writer as it may be, time must be managed. Schedules and systems must be established in order to attain the perfect juxtaposition and equilibrium of work (chores and responsibilities) and play (writing).

Book chronicles Iowa vacations

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

A book from a retired writer for the Des Moines Register has the title “Iowa is the most fun you can have in the US” and chronicles the many Iowa vacations that the author has taken over the years. Throughout his lifetime he has never been out of the state and every year he went to a different place for his vacation. The vacations changed over the years, starting with just he and his wife, then adding kids one by one, then subtracting the kids one by one, sometimes adding a kid and a kid-in-law, and finally ending with his last vacation alone after the death of his beloved wife. The book is very well written with lots of humor and lots of kid stories such as the camping trip when the kids brought a kitty into the tent. The kitty was all black with a white stripe down the middle of it’s back. The story is told from the perspective of being alone on the last vacation and taking that vacation to look back at all the good time he and his family enjoyed. Although the ending is a bit sad I say it is recommend reading as you will laugh till you cry at most of the adventures.

Central Iowa tourism discussed by new author

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

A well known author is just finishing up the final pages of a book on central Iowa tourism that he has been working on for two years now. He did all the research on the book himself by finding every attraction and restaurant in the central Iowa area and visiting them himself or with his family. He is an avid camper so he would find a local campground and not only would he write about that he would use that campground as a central point to visit all the attractions in the area. He used the information supplied by the campground workers to find the hidden treasures of that particular area. He ate no meals at the campsite as he was also reviewing the restaurants in the area. One thing that surprised him was the number of museums that were scattered around the state. It felt like there was some kind of a museum in every other small town and the things they were dedicated to were quite varied. Some of them were dedicated to such things as salt and pepper shakers or old telephones. Most were just dedicated to the past of the community but those were quite interesting as well.

East Iowa tourism boasts the best vacations anywhere

Monday, February 18th, 2008

I picked up a good book the other day and I really enjoyed reading about what was essentially east Iowa tourism. The story was about a couple who put their boat in the Mississippi river at the Minnesota border and planned to live in the boat for the entire summer. As they floated down the river they stopped at different restaurants and attractions each of which they rated. From what I understand from the book people all along the river like to place their top of the line restaurants where their patrons can have a view of the mighty Mississippi. Many of the places they stopped actually had a dock where people could tie their boats and either go inside or some would actually bring the food and drink out to the boat. During the sleep hours they seemed to have no problem finding a desolate area along the bank and tie up the boat for the night. It took them almost three months to make the trip as some places like the Quad Cities had so much to offer that they spent an entire week there. Other places they would just float through only leaving the boat long enough to grab a bite to eat

South Dakota Jazz

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

I found a wonderful book for entertainment in South Dakota. Now I’ve never taken any South Dakota vacations but after reading this book I just may have to try one. The book chronicled a jazz musician who was down on his luck and got stranded in Sioux Falls. He had no one to rely on so he had to find employment in the entertainment industry around the city to earn enough to buy a car so he could make it back home. The book talks about all the establishments he went to on his quest. The story was fictional, but the author did his homework and actually visited every entertainment venue he could find in the city. Jazz is not big in Sioux Falls so he only found two places where he could find jazz musicians on a regular basis. He interviewed all of them that he could get to talk and came up with some wonderful behind the scene stories. He also did a wonderful job describing the art that these musicians share with the world. The joints may be seedy, but the booze flows and the crowd enjoys what is described as “some of the best jazz this side of New Orleans.

IT Certification Study Guides Are Excellent Learning Aids

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Once you have the appropriate certification study guides, look over the contents of each and plan the order in which you wish to proceed. Take each certification study guide on one chapter at a time, making notes, and at the end of each of your study sessions, use your notes to prepare a summary of each chapter you covered. There are lots of guides available from java certification books to linux certification. Then answer the related practice test questions in the certificating study guides, see which areas require more study, and keep going over everything until you have exhausted everything the certification study guides can teach you. While IT certification study guides are no substitute for hands-on IT experience, they are excellent aids for those who have that experience but need help in honing in on the actual certification test requirements. Certification study guides are great timesavers, and with their practice exams, real confidence boosters for people who suffer from test anxiety.

Listen to Audio Books

Friday, September 14th, 2007

It’s a great joy with the coming of audio books; learning has been made more easily. Also, with the coming of audio books, one can easily enjoy taking note of a fun or entertaining book better than with a traditional book. Since “listening” to an audio book one can still get the information contained in that as they would get if they “read” it, many would of late buy an audio book format of their favorite book, in preference to the physical book format. That’s the main reason why nearly every popular book title now comes in the physical book format and the audio book format.

Many will agree what a great time saver it would be to “listen” to a book instead of “read” it, especially when one “listens” while driving a car or truck. Audio books can also be a great source of knowledge acquisition due to the ease of listening to them. No wonder that kids, the middle aged and even the old folks prefer books that come in audio book formats than the normal physical format. For sure, Free Online Audio Books is also a great site for you to listen to. Book publishers have confirmed that they spend far less producing audio books than they do hardcover or paperback; I suspect this might adversely affect the future of normal hardcover or paperback books.

Since global warming is now a subject, audio books are an area of the solution by helping to conserve nature. Many feel that their most important reason for preferring audio books is the fact that they can do more than one chore at the same time — wash dishes and still take heed to audio books or jog and still hearken to audio books One very powerful advantage of audio book is that they may well be “read” while it’s dark unlike other normal books that can’t be read unless there’s light. From the many advantages contained above you can understand the sudden craze for audio books over hardcover and paperback books; it’s now time to also join in the craze by buying your own book titles in audio books.
