I recollect when reality TV shows were first starting up on television. I’m always a bit surprised to see people complaining about their satellite TV service. As a happy DISH Network customer for almost 10 years, I always wonder what problems people are running into.

A while back I had to have some new dishes installed as well as a couple of new receivers because I had upgraded my system to HDTV. About three days after the installer left, I think I began to understand why some people run into problems with their satellite TV service.

I switched on the TV and found that I was not able to receive a number of channels. My suspicion turned immediately to the installation and I went outside to take a look up on my roof at the dishes and sure enough, one of them had flopped over and was no longer aiming at the satellite.

Being a do-it-yourself kind of guy and one who is comfortable climbing around on the roof tinkering with things, I scrambled up the ladder I had decided to leave standing against the house for a few days for just this type of event.

With walkie-talkie in hand and my wife in the house in front of the TV with the other walkie-talkie, I was easily able to realign the dish by moving it and having her report to me if she was receiving the channel or not.

The wind was blowing rather strong that day but certainly not strong enough to blow a satellite dish out of alignment. The installer had simply done a careless job of installing the dish and did not tighten the horizontal alignment bolts sufficiently.

The lesson here is to make sure you get a good installation. Don’t be afraid to watch the installer do the work and keep an eye open for anything that does not look like it is being done properly.

I’m convinced that the majority of satellite TV customers that have problems with their systems can trace those problems back to a poorly-installed system.

Home Improvement was a television show that aired from fall 1991 to spring 1999. There were 204 shows done including a pilot. The show starred Tim Allen as Tim Taylor, the host of a cable TV show called “Tool Time”. The plots generally center on the family life of the Taylors.
