Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland- A Timeless Tale

Friday, April 6th, 2007

After the possible alternative titles Alice Among the Fairies and Alice’s Golden Hour were rejected, the work was finally published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 under the Lewis Carroll pen name which Dodgson had first used some nine years earlier. The illustrations this time were by Sir John Tenniel; Dodgson evidently realised that a published book would need the skills of a professional artist.

Usborne Animal Books

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

There is something fascinating about animals. We all love them (well, most of us), but children seem to be especially enamored with fuzzy, little faces. Perhaps they like them because so many of them are the same size as they are, and perhaps because animals are so interestingly different. I really can’t explain it, but I do know that the fascination is real. For the longest time my daughter’s favorite Usborne books have been ones that have featured animals and stories about them. Animal books were all she wanted to read for a long time, and they are still her favorite.

Huckleberry Finn - A Life On The Mississippi

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Four hundred manuscript pages of Huckleberry Finn were written in the summer of 1876, right after the publication of Tom Sawyer. Some accounts have Twain taking seven years off after his first burst of creativity, eventually finishing the book in 1883. Other accounts have Twain working on Finn in tandem with The Prince and the Pauper and other works in 1880 and other years.

Near the end of Huckleberry Finn, Twain had written Life on the Mississippi, which is said to have heavily influenced the former book. The work recounts Twain’s memories and new experiences after a 22 year absence from the Mississippi. The book is of most note because Twain introduces the real meaning of his pseudonym….read more at Huckleberry Finn - A Life On The Mississippi

The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes

Friday, March 30th, 2007

In 1885 he married Louisa (or Louise) Hawkins, known as “Touie”, who suffered from tuberculosis and eventually died in 1906.[2] He married Jean Leckie in 1907, whom he had first met and fallen in love with in 1897 but had maintained a platonic relationship with her out of loyalty to his first wife. Conan Doyle had five children, two with his first wife (Mary and Kingsley), and three with his second wife (Jean, Denis, and Adrian).

While Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had many other literary successes he will undoubtable remain best known for His Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes.

The Tradegy And Comedy Of William Shakespeare

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

It is believed that Shakespeare produced most of his work between 1586 and 1612, although the exact dates and chronology of the plays attributed to him are under considerable debate, as is the authorship of the works attributed to him. He is counted among the very few playwrights who have excelled in both tragedy and comedy, and his plays combine popular appeal with complex characterisation, poetic grandeur and philosophical depth…..read more at The Tradegy And Comedy Of William Shakespeare

Paperback books

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

I am an avid reader. I enjoy a wide variety of topics. I read for personal development, career advancement and also pleasure. It seems that I always have a number of paperback books as well as professional journals, lying around the bed and on the coffee table. At one point I had joined a book club. It was fun getting novels as they first arrived on the market, but I found that I did not like reading the hardcover books. They are heavy to hold and take up a great deal of space to store. Also they are quite expensive compared to paperback books. My neighbor is also an avid reader. We like many of the same authors so we exchange paperback books quite often.

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

a writer has the advantage of accessing many writers resource alternatives that will give them the ability to find representation that is suited to they type of material they write.Without adequate writers resources, it would be so much easier for many of us to give up and forget the dream of writing.  Many would not continue to write and grow as writers if we didn’t have opportunities, if we didn’t have mentors, if we didn’t have the many communities that make up the wide array of writers resources that can be found on the Internet…….read more at Where To Find Writers Resources

The Adventures Of Black Beauty-An Epic Tale

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Black Beauty is the hero, a fine, good-natured stallion, who in the course of his life experiences situations and owners both good and bad. The two other main characters are Ginger, a chestnut mare who is teamed with Black Beauty as a cart horse, and their friend Merrylegs, a sweet pony with a good and kind owner.

The three tell their stories, with the ups and downs of life. Black Beauty sees many sides of life, from his birth on a horse farm with kind owners, eventually becoming a riding horse, a carriage horse for a wealthy owner and then a period as the overworked and ill-treated cart horse.

Although Anna Sewell did not intend “Black Beauty” to be a children’s story, this classic book has sold over 30 million copies, with three movies eventually made, based on the only book written by this crippled woman with a passion for the plight of the 19th century horse…..read more at The Adventures Of Black Beauty

Classical Music 101

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

A Music audio without music ;-) - This is the history of music, and it makes for much easier listening than what I had thought when I bought it (Plenty more music related audios available at the store):
In clear and entertaining prose, Fred Plotkin (Fred has written for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Opera News, and other publications.) explores a thousand years of music, introduces listeners to more than one hundred great works, and profiles in depth many significant composers, including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Dvok, and Mahler. He describes all the musical instruments in the orchestra, defines major musical terms, and makes music theory comprehensible for the uninitiated. There are also conversations with important musicians who offer fascinating insights about their art.

Classical Music 101 is a highly accessible guide to discovering the glories of classical music. The only regret I have is, that the audio ha not a single musical selection included.

Black Beauty

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

First published in 1877, Black Beauty was written by Anna Sewell, a woman who was crippled since childhood and who had great compassion for both people and animals. Anna’s mother was a popular writer of many children’s books, which Anna helped to edit.

Oddly, Black Beauty was the only book Anna wrote and was written in the year before she died. Published just months before her death, she did live long enough to see her book succeed. Her focus on the plight of the 19th century horse grew, in part, out of her experiences as a child, driving her father’s carriage as he went to and from work in London.

Tragedy at Windfield School - Ken Follett

Saturday, January 20th, 2007
I recently listened to 16 hours of captivating audio on my MP3 player. Hey, this is great! Rather than reading Ken Follett’s book I simply downloaded this audio book thriller and the loaded the MP3 player. No more boredom when stuck in traffic. The commute all of a sudden became something I looked forward to!
This is the plot in a few sentences: In 1866 tragedy strikes at the exclusive Windfield School when a mysterious accident takes the life of a student. Among the student’s circle of friends are Hugh Pilaster; Hugh’s older cousin Edward, dissolute heir to the Pilaster banking fortune; and Micky Miranda, the handsome son of a brutal South American oligarchy. The death and its aftermath begin the spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives. From the exclusive men’s clubs that cater to every dark desire of England’s upper classes to the luxurious ballrooms of the manipulators of the world’s wealth, Follett conjures up a stunning panorama of intrigue.

A Dangerous Fortune” sweeeps the characters toward a perilous climax where greed, fed by the shocking truth of a young man’s death, must be stopped - or the dreams of a nation will die.

Audios that Help You Learn Spanish

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

When in school, learning Spanish was the class I liked least…. Vocabulary and pronounciation just did not like me and I certainly did not like them!

Recently a friend pointed me to the download site for the Pimsleur Spanish I Part 1 audio. He had started to learn Spanish with it and told me it was so easy, he could not believe it: Plugging in the earphones about an hour a day and listening to this foreign language audio lesson, made his brain absorbe the stuff automatically. He says he starts to think ahead and sometimes talk (!) ahead of the audio, whilst listening on his commute to and from work.

So I gave it a try too, and yep! this is the way to go!!! I’ve now started to download the next lessons - Pimsleur Spanish Course - and am ‘training’ my brain to understand Spanish. It is truly fun, realizing that the Hispanic TV channels now all of sudden start to make sense - I actually enjoy learning Spanish now.

Kids often emit a frustrated groan whenever they hear the words ‘book report’. Generations upon generations have dreaded writing book reports, and there is no sign hat this will change any time soon. Some kids struggle when it comes to reading while some find it to be a great joy. However, even the best readers hate to write book reports. As a result, there is often a lot of cheating when children are asked to review a book. In fact, there many websites that specialize in selling already written book reports and term papers. How to Find Cheap Text Books

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

Do you fit the stereotype of the poor college student? Maybe you are eating ramen and sucking down coffee to stay fed and awake for those late-night study sessions. It’s easy to come out of a four year university with over a hundred grand in debts because college is expensive. In fact, some private college tuitions can reach over $35,000. Of course, tuition doesn’t cover everything because college students still need to pay for things like housing, clothes, food, and books.

Detective Story Audio Books.

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

Welcome, to our ready-made, high quality, downloadable audio book store.

For this month, we shall concentrate our attention on the famous Sherlock Holmes.

“For generations, the legend has been passed down - a satanic tale of a gigantic hell-hound, a devil incarnate who stalks the wastes of Dartmoor wreaking a bloody and terrible vengeance on the Baskerville family.

What turns out to be one of the most interesting cases of the great detective’s career begins when a country doctor visits Holmes and Watson in London. He brings with him the legend of the hound and news of the sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville. Sir Charles’ heir, Henry, is arriving from America and the doctor is afraid for the young man’s life. Holmes despatches Dr Watson to accompany them back to the dark and sombre estate in the Devon moor.

With peril at every turn and a murderous escaped convict at large, the mystery deepens. Is the ancient legend true, or is the hideous creature merely a part of a sinister conspiracy whose origins are all too diabolically human?”

That, of course, was from ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Click on the title, or ‘more’ and it will take you to my main site, where you may indulge your self with additional reading or, indeed, even actually listen to a generous extract from the stories.  This site consists of over over 5,000 audio titles and over 7,200 webpages.  All the data (including photos of every audiobook, and streaming audio samples) has already been entered and is continually updated.  You have powerful search features and everything you need to locate the audio book you seek.

Clicking ’site map’, on the left will offer a further list, containing not only Sherlock Holmes, but other luminaries such as Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Edna Buchanan, J.D. Robb, etc.

Of course these are just a few, in this genre, that you may listen to on my actual main audio book web site.

Such as:

  • Detective
  • Horror & Suspense
  • Thrillers
  • True Crime
  • Action & Adventure
  • Classics

And much more

Cheers,

Ray Cunningham.
