Music for cooking?

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

I received emails from both Nicole of the baking sheet and debbie of words to eat by this past week, “tagging” me for the food blogging meme, music to cook to. My first thought was “I don’t listen to a great deal of music…and I don’t know anything about music anymore”, and I passed the task along to S. and his extensive music tastes and knowledge. He diligently answered the questions and then sent his writing along to me.
I sat on that email for a few days, indulging myself in Sugar High Fridays (great job, Clement!) and making dinner for a good friend on Saturday night (recipes to come later). I thought about it more and more and realized that the questions, though slightly foreign to me (why, I don’t know, I did used to work in a record store for crying out loud!), were directed at the food blogger in the house. And, although I have tried to convince S. to start a food blog himself he has yet to do that…and having him answer the questions for me was taking the easy way out.
So I redid them myself. Try not to be disappointed.

PBS becomes a Missouri tourist

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The local PBS station wanted to do a special on Missouri so they loaded up the van and headed towards the state. On the first rest stop once they crossed the border they picked up a Missouri tourist guide and started looking at the attractions. They decided a trip to Branson might be just the thing as it was reasonably long drive and they could film quite a bit of the countryside and show how it changes from north to south. They started filming once they got to Kansas City showcasing the parts of big city seen as one drives along 435. When they exited on the south side they carefully documented how the city flows to the suburbs and how the suburbs flow into the country. Starting out was mostly prairie which slowly changed to more forest. The small towns were chronicled also. The further they went the more trees and hills there were and the views became more spectacular. They actually bypassed Branson showing the changing scenery as they drove up into the Ozark mountains. After having all that footage they returned to Branson and highlighted some of the shows and events there. Rather than a documentary I think they actually filmed a commercial for Missouri.

South Dakota Jazz

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

I found a wonderful book for entertainment in South Dakota. Now I’ve never taken any South Dakota vacations but after reading this book I just may have to try one. The book chronicled a jazz musician who was down on his luck and got stranded in Sioux Falls. He had no one to rely on so he had to find employment in the entertainment industry around the city to earn enough to buy a car so he could make it back home. The book talks about all the establishments he went to on his quest. The story was fictional, but the author did his homework and actually visited every entertainment venue he could find in the city. Jazz is not big in Sioux Falls so he only found two places where he could find jazz musicians on a regular basis. He interviewed all of them that he could get to talk and came up with some wonderful behind the scene stories. He also did a wonderful job describing the art that these musicians share with the world. The joints may be seedy, but the booze flows and the crowd enjoys what is described as “some of the best jazz this side of New Orleans.

Mortorcycle Arts

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

South Dakota has a yearly Harley Davidson motorcycle event and it adds greatly to central South Dakota tourism. This is like an  opera to the blue collar folks that show up. There are all sorts of concerts and entertainment. Of course a lot of revolves around the cycles, but not all. There are massive amounts of beer consumed along with other not so legal substances. The event has become tamer over the years as the participants have aged but most really have a good time. I have some photographs of one year at the event, the theme that year seemed to be ladies flashing everyone with a camera. It was funny seeing a sixty five year old lady that weighed two hundred pounds lift her blouse and expose her chest. I can imagine her doing that when she was in her thirties but it would seem to me that it would loose it’s appeal thirty years later. I guess they were just reliving memories of their youth. The cycle drag races aren’t as big as they used to be either. I would imagine the fully decked out gold wing lookalikes just don’t have the raw speed and power that the old duck tails had.

Why Learn Guitar – It’s Easy

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

One of the most appealing feature of the guitar is the fact that it is so very easy to learn how to play the guitar. In fact, some people are able to start playing a tune on the guitar in as little as an hour. Yes, it is possible to learn the guitar in 60 minutes.

Branson is in it’s off season

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Have you ever been to Branson Missouri? If you haven’t you should try it. It’s the off season right now but starting in spring the place jumps. You can see all kinds of shows at night, in fact the main street looks like Las Vegas at night with all the signs advertising what is going on. During the day you can golf to your hearts content. There are at least four courses there, three of them public. You can take a ride on the Branson scenic railroad, always a joy. There are countless other forms of entertainment. Take the kids along, Branson is a very family friendly place. You do want to get a hotel room close to your desired venue though, the traffic during peak times can get very congested. Most times you can walk a half mile faster than you can drive it. You are also close to Table Rock Lake if you enjoy boating or fishing. The night life is mostly country western in nature although there are other types. Best get there early for the best seats. So load up the station wagon, hit the road, and head for Missouri. You can’t believe how much fun you will have.

Classic Rock Drives Rock Merchandise Industry

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Led Zeppelin T-shirts, Rush baseball caps and Bon Jovi jackets. Classic rock merchandise is hot and many of the consumers are young people who had not even been born when these classic groups were enjoying the pinnacle of their success.

Take a look around eBay sometime and check out all the classic rock-related merchandise. This stuff is still selling and is responsible for a very significant share of rock merchandise and memorabilia being sold today.

In addition to the "real" goods, digital goods that honor classic rock artists are also doing well. MP3 music downloads are available for just about every classic rock artist you can think of as well as classic rock ringtones.

If you had been in a coma since 1982 and awoke today you might have a hard time figuring out if it was still the 1980′s if your only contact with the outside world was an FM radio. Classic rock radio stations are very popular in many markets these days.

I suspect there are people who are getting tired of classic rock but you cannot count me among them. That is the music I listened to growing up and still love today. I don’t think I will ever tire of it.

Are They Picking The Very Best Contestants For The American Idol Tour?

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Although it may sound like I have a strong dislike for the American Idol tour. Truth be told, I don’t have anything against the American Idol tour or the television show that spawned it. As a matter of fact, I watched the first season, and parts of the next ones that came after. I honestly like Kelly Clarkson’s singing, and I was delighted to see that she was victorious. The thing that surprised me was all the pandemonium that ensued for the following American Idol tour. The entire top ten from the show toured. I wondered why everyone was so eager on seeing this American Idol tour in particular. I wonder if we will ever know.

David Bowie News

Friday, December 14th, 2007

David Bowie (born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947) is an English singer, songwriter, actor, multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger and audio engineer.

Active in five decades of rock music, and frequently re-inventing his music and image, Bowie is widely regarded as an influential innovator, particularly for his work through the 1970s. Bowie has taken cues from a wide range of fine art, philosophy and literature.

He is also a film and stage actor, music video director and visual artist.

Although he released an album and numerous singles earlier, David Bowie first caught the eye and ear of the public in the autumn of 1969, when his space-age mini-melodrama “Space Oddity” reached the top five of the UK singles chart. After a three-year period of experimentation he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam-rock era as a flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust, spearheaded by the hit single “Starman” and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The relatively short-lived Ziggy persona epitomised a career often marked by musical innovation, reinvention and striking visual presentation.

Social Distortion Biography

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Social Distortion (sometimes referred to simply as Social D) is a seminal punk rock band formed in 1978 in Orange County, California. The band currently consists of Mike Ness (vocals, guitars), Jonny “2 Bags” Wickersham (guitars), Brent Harding (bass) and Charlie Quintana (drums). They, along with Minor Threat, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains and many others, are often credited as one of the leading bands of the 1980s punk revival.

The group briefly disbanded in 1985, due to frontman Ness’ drug addiction, but reformed around 1986 and have continued being active today, even after the death of longtime guitarist Dennis Danell, who succumbed to heart failure in 2000. Since their inception the band lineup has been a virtual revolving-door of talent, with many members coming and going – Ness has been the only constant member.

Learn To Play Guitar With A Classical Guitar

Monday, December 3rd, 2007
The classical guitar or Spanish guitar is the most popular of the three kinds of guitar. The classical guitar has a hollow body with a hole that acts as a resonator of the sound produced by plucking and strumming the strings. It normally has six strings made of nylon. When compared to steel strings, nylon strings have less tension thus making the classical guitar easy to strum or pluck. Using only a person’s fingers is the proper way that it is to be played, not with a pick. The classical guitar is normally used without amplifiers but classical guitar owners can equip one if desired or just play the classical guitar in front of a microphone. The classical guitar is used mainly for playing classical, Flamenco and Latin music.

Pink Floyd Biography

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Pink Floyd are an English rock band that initially earned recognition for their psychedelic rock music, and, as they evolved, for their avant-garde progressive rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music’s most successful acts, the group has sold over 200 million albums worldwide and an estimated 73.5 million albums in the United States alone.

Pink Floyd had moderate success in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by the late Syd Barrett; however, Barrett’s erratic behaviour forced his colleagues to eventually replace him with guitarist and singer David Gilmour. After Barrett’s departure, singer and bass player Roger Waters gradually became the band’s leader and main songwriter until his eventual departure from the group. The band recorded several albums, achieving worldwide success with The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979). In 1985, Waters declared Pink Floyd defunct, but the remaining members, led by Gilmour, continued recording and touring under the name, enjoying commercial success with A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994) and eventually reaching a settlement with Waters over the use of the name.

Buying Sheet Music Online

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Online sheet music is going to come with a price tag, but when you buy this way, you are usually getting sheet music that is very accurate, and you know it has come from a legal source. If you aren’t sure that the online sheet music you have is legal, search around for the copyright. Remember that even when you buy a set, you may have to pay money to make copies of it. When you are getting online sheet music for use in a band, or at a school for example, you have to pay attention to the specifics of what you can do with it and what you cannot.

A New Generation of Classic Rock Fans

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

To some of us, "Classic Rock" is the music we grew up listening to. As one of the "baby boomer" crowd, that is certainly true for me.

My favorites growing up with groups like Rush, Kansas, Yes and Heart. I sometimes wonder what happened to all those old vinyl LP albums I had but somewhere along the way I lost track of them. When the CD was invented, I guess I focused on getting all my music on that new scratch-free audio medium.

What’s kind of cool to see these days is a kind of resurgence of the music I grew up with. Classic rock stations are in just about every radio market and bands from the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s are doing reunion tours in front of huge crowds.

It’s nice to see that the music of my generation is not falling out of favor just yet. It brings a smile to my face every time I see some high school kid with a Led Zeppelin T Shirt or an AC/DC baseball cap.

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007
Last year we went to my cousins house for a family Christmas celebration, but when we arrived it felt like something was missing. It took awhile for my wife and I to realize why my cousins Christmas party didn’t feel right. There was good food and even better company. The Christmas decorations were beautiful and everyone was enjoying sharing their life stories while we all watched the kids open their Christmas presents with glee. However, we left with an empty feeling that couldn’t be explained. All we did know was, Christmas at my cousin’s was less than memorable. It wasn’t until I went to another holiday affair that I realized what the significant difference between the events really was. There was no Christmas music. The absence of the holiday songs may not seem like a big deal but it makes a huge difference. The other celebration was warm and inviting and the Christmas music helped create an atmosphere fit for a grand event.

In the future, if you are planning a Christmas party to share with friends, family and loved ones, do everyone a giant favor and turn the television off for awhile. Play some lovely Christmas music instead. You will see what a difference Christmas songs really do make. I promise you, your Christmas events will be much more memorable when everyone’s favorite Christmas music is part of the entertainment.

We all know about that other world famous composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, but now tell me, how does another musician with the same first and last name get anywhere trying to promote his original music on the internet. He would have to become an seo expert to gain any name recognition, albeit someone else’s name.

Lacuna Coil News

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Lacuna Coil are an gothic metal band from Milan, Italy.

They were formerly known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal. The band was heavily inspired by gothic imagery, and the members have been known, musically, for composing midtempo songs consisting of guitar lines overlayed with prominent keyboard work, and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic detached sound. Much of their more recent material, however, sees a more down-tuned style, featuring a more distinct bass line and a higher mixing of the guitars within the songs. According to the band, they are and have been influenced by Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Anathema, Septic Flesh, Black Sabbath, Type O Negative, Imago Mortis, Depeche Mode, In Flames and Amorphis amongst others. They have played among the world’s biggest heavy metal festivals on the main stage including Ozzfest, Bloodstock Open Air, Wacken Open Air, etc. and are scheduled to play Japan’s Loudpark Festival this October.
