Is Photography Art?

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

The controversy about whether photography is art is one that has been raging in the art world for a long time and we are not likely to totally solve it here. But it can be an important decision you have to make if you are considering a career in photography with the goal of producing quality art works. If that is where you are, the idea that someone would say “That’s not art, you just took a picture” is pretty disturbing. So it’s worth looking at the question from several different angles before we pick which side to weigh in on.

Of course, art is a subjective thing but you can make art from photo. Many people would look at a Jackson Pollack “splatter” artwork and determine most definitely that modern art is not art because it “doesn’t look like anything.” And if you spend any time in the modern art world, you will definitely see something at some time along the way occupying space in a perfectly respectable art museum that, to you, could never be considered art.

So is it just a matter of opinion? To some extent, yes. But there is an art world and an industry behind it that depend on there being some standards upon which art is judged. One such standard is the intent of the artist. If you produce a photograph or an art work derived from a photograph that is intended to be viewed as art, then the viewer is obligated to try to see the artistic merit in it. Whether the viewer sees that merit or not may depend on the viewer’s abilities, how good you are at getting your artistic message across or many other factors.

But just wanting something to be art doesn’t make it art does it? As a layman in the art world, I sometimes go with the “I don’t know art but I know what I like” system of evaluating pieces I see. Art, after all, has a tendency to touch us in another place that is above and beyond the image. It is an emotional place, a place of reflection and understanding. Maybe we would say it touches our “soul”. For a work to be art, there should be a message, a feeling, a reason the artist made the work because he or she wanted to say something, even if how I interpret the statement is different than what the artist meant.

So that might also be an evaluation of a photograph as to its artistic merit or not. Now the primary objection to whether photography is art sometimes is that a photograph is often a realistic depiction of a moment taken with a machine and some would say that “anybody can take a picture.” The implication is that the same mechanical skill it might take to paint a picture of sculpt a statue is not needed for photographic art.

It’s true that the mechanical skill that the guy at Wal-Mart might need to take baby pictures may be the same as a great photographic artist might need. But the objection doesn’t hold up because the same human language is used to create great poetry as it takes yell out obscenities at a baseball game. So it isn’t the skill that makes it art.

Good evidence comes from the credit some great art experts have given to photographic exhibitions in the fine museums in the world. The very fact that photography is considered art by those who know may be evidence enough. So the conclusion must be that because the arguments against the artistic value of photographs are weak and people who know consider photography to be art, then we are safe in viewing what we do artistically too. And that opens up that side of your soul to express yourself through the medium you love the most – photography.

PBS becomes a Missouri tourist

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The local PBS station wanted to do a special on Missouri so they loaded up the van and headed towards the state. On the first rest stop once they crossed the border they picked up a Missouri tourist guide and started looking at the attractions. They decided a trip to Branson might be just the thing as it was reasonably long drive and they could film quite a bit of the countryside and show how it changes from north to south. They started filming once they got to Kansas City showcasing the parts of big city seen as one drives along 435. When they exited on the south side they carefully documented how the city flows to the suburbs and how the suburbs flow into the country. Starting out was mostly prairie which slowly changed to more forest. The small towns were chronicled also. The further they went the more trees and hills there were and the views became more spectacular. They actually bypassed Branson showing the changing scenery as they drove up into the Ozark mountains. After having all that footage they returned to Branson and highlighted some of the shows and events there. Rather than a documentary I think they actually filmed a commercial for Missouri.

So you’ve just gotten back from visiting the works of Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Da Vinci at the nearest museum. You were amazed at the beauty and precision of the work. But did you know that it’s highly like that you were not looking at the original piece of art?

While those replicas are extremely valuable, they are not nearly as valuable at the originals which are often owned by private collectors, banks, etc. One of the few originals pieces of art that the public can see is the Mona Lisa at the Louvre. World War II Art

Monday, December 24th, 2007

One of the World War II art works that has the most lasting influence is the image of Rosy the Riveter. This was part of a series of works to inspire women to join the workforce to help make weapons. Of all of the World War II art that was made, this image is one of the only ones which has really stuck around for the long run, inspiring feminists to organize. If only more World War II art had such noble effects!

If you’re looking for pictures of art and culture in World War 2, you probably need to begin your search on the Internet. These pieces are becoming more and more rare as time passes. The art of the “Greatest Generation” continues to inspire people today; World War II art will always show your patriotism.

The Getty Center – A Magical Place for the Arts

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

There are many wonderful art museums throughout the U.S. where you can take in the greatest artistic works ever created.  Mid-major cities like Denver have invested in an expansion to the Denver Art Museum that includes not only quality exhibitions inside, but also an artistic architectural design.  The Denver Art Museum’s expansion spans Bannock Street with an extension that comes to a point over the side street.  However, while cities like Denver have a renewed focus on the arts with investment in their art museum and performing arts center, they still have a long way to go if they want to rival the cultural attractions of our alpha cities like New York and Los Angeles.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or “The Met” in New York is probably the most famous art museum in the states.  The Met has been the benefactor of considerable investment by philanthropic donors in a city where there is a large population of money.  The 19th Century European wing of the Met is a particularly popular exhibit, though will be closed in the second half of 2007 for renovation of the floors.  The Museum of Modern Art, or MOMA, on 53rd Street, is also a world renowned

However, while New York gets a lot of attention for its art museums, The Getty Center in Los Angeles, home to the J Paul Getty Museum, is really something special. The Getty Center is located on a beautiful hill in Brentwood and offers a beautifully landscaped site and gorgeous views of Los Angeles.  The Getty Center exhibits European paintings, manuscripts, drawings, and photography.  The Getty is uniquely Los Angeles and the Getty’s photography exhibits are usually spectacular and sets this museum apart.  An afternoon at the J Paul Getty Museum followed by enjoying the sunset from the Getty Center lawns is something that everyone should experience.

Sports Photography Can Be Fun And Frustrating

Monday, June 4th, 2007

You can see the results on the newspaper sports pages practically everyday so you know that taking good pictures of sporting events is possible, it just does not seem that sports photography would be as hard. Portrait photography seems to be difficult enough with the proper lighting and the direction in which the subject is looking, but taking pictures of subjects that seem to be constantly moving can add another dimension to the difficulty.

By definition, sports photography can be tough because you are trying to depict the action of the sport through a still photograph.

Some things to know about Digital Cameras

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Most people do not have a slightest idea of how the digital cameras work, or in fact anything about them — so I’ve assembled a bunch of things to know about them. I’ll be glad if this info will be helpful!

- The first consumer digital camera hit the market in 1997.

- Many digital cameras employ sosphisticated algorithms to reproduce color accurately.

- All digital cameras use a CCD or an metaloxide semi conductor (MOS) sensor, or a combination of these.

- In the early days pictures used to be stored in brand-specific file formats; now any camera can save an image as a JPEG .

- These days, most LivePreview Digital cameras can take short movie clips.

Scrapbook organizer

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

I first got into scrapbooking as a hobby after my son was born. I ended up quitting my full-time job in order to stay home with the baby, and I needed something to do to occupy my time when he was napping. I was taking so many pictures and collecting so many mementos of my baby that scrapbooking seemed like a natural choice. Although things went well with my new hobby at the beginning, I soon got overwhelmed because I wasn’t completing my tasks and all my materials were scattered throughout the house. What I needed was a scrapbook organizer to help me keep things in place. Organization has never been my strong suit, so I knew I would benefit from a scrapbook organizer (provided, of course, that I actually used it).

4 Color Printing

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

When using 4 color printing services, its not just the cost it takes that it is important, but the time it takes to get the job done. I had a 4 color printing job for a seminar the other week at a national conference of aeronautical engineers and designers, and was to give a presentation. Power point is a little stale, many people believe, and so I thought that I’d hand out everyone their own personal and personalized printouts of my stats with places where they can make their own notes as well as a form which they can use to send them back to me, and ask questions and give feedback. But, unfortunaltely, I was way behind schedule, and was only able to give the job to the printer palce four days before the scheduled event was to take place, so there was a rush on the order, and it was more expensive than a normal order.

Used digital camera

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Digital cameras have come a long way in the last few years. It used to be that to even get a decent picture, you had to get the newest digital camera available. Only the most high-tech digital cameras would work. Other ones would have such low resolution that if you blew up the picture, you would barely be able to see anything. Nowadays, however, even the used digital cameras are amazing. The resolution has gotten so good, in fact, that a high end used digital SLR camera is nearly as good as a new one. If you are willing to buy a used camera, you can actually have professional grade photographs for a fraction of the price. I have been using a used digital camera for a long time, so I know.

Fine art posters

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I have to admit that I’m not very big on interior design or home decorating. I mean, I don’t have the most expensive furniture, my fabrics and colors aren’t coordinated, and I don’t make the best use of space. I think it’s safe to say you won’t be seeing any pictures of my place in a “Better Homes & Garden” photo shoot anytime soon! Nevertheless, I believe that I do one thing well: my walls. To me, there’s nothing more depressing than a home with bare walls, so I go out of my way to make sure that mine are covered with interesting things to look at. Some of my favorite wall hangings are the framed fine art posters that I’ve purchased over the years.

Satellite photos

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Since the first satellite was launched, a wide range of information in the form of satellite photos has been streaming back to earth. And our meteorologists and weather scientists have been able to better understand climate and weather phenomena. But the hey day of satellite photos can be considered to have come about with advances in espionage. Most countries with satellites used their eye in the sky to take satellite photos of enemy installations, terrain information and weather conditions in order that they could better plan their attack or defense strategy. This too was information that could not be obtained in any other way and helped those countries with superior technology, better economies and access to millions of dollars for research and development to obtain, study and implement their strategies based on the information present in satellite photos.

Lighthouse Pictures

Monday, January 29th, 2007

I actually stopped buying lighthouse pictures the day that I went out to the ocean. One of my friend was going to the beach, and she thought that she could do me some good by getting me out of the house for a few hours. She lured me out there with the promise of a lighthouse, but when I looked at it it was old and decrepit. Although there were lighthouse pictures in the gift shop, they showed the lighthouse at an earlier age.

Ansel Adams – The Beauty Of The Wilderness

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Ansel Adams was a virtual magician in bringing the moment of a just-blooming flower or a leaf floating on still water to life. Ansel Adams brought the beauty of the wilderness to the attention and appreciation of hundreds of thousands of Americans long before environmental awareness became a coined phrase.

Find Bathroom Double Towel bars

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

Should I choose a bathtub or shower and what accessories should I consider?
There are many different reasons that a person would choose a bathtub. I like a tub, since you can relax. Other people would take a shower over a bathtub. However, here are some reasons why you may like a bathtub.

You can use a bathtub to soak your body after long hard day at work and make sure you have double towel bars. It will help you relax your whole body. Put in some bubbles, maybe play some soft music, and just enjoy it. Maybe you would like to read a book and light a few candles.
